About Us |
Welcome to Carbon School District! It is our hope that this website will serve you in providing important information regarding our instructional programs, our improvement plans, our support programs, and about our staff. We encourage you to browse the website and to give us feedback about the content and the structure.
Carbon School District is located in Carbon County, situated in the southeastern region of the state. We serve approximately 3500 students in five elementary schools, two junior high schools and two high schools. We serve students across a radius that measures approximately 35 miles. Obviously, transportation is a major challenge for our rural school district. Our buildings range in age from Helper Junior High, constructed in 1936, to Bruin Point Elementary, constructed in 2006. Capital improvements and upgrades are a major focus for our district.
Carbon School District has been fortunate to have participated in many grant opportunities, the largest of which have been federal reading grants. We participated in the Reading Excellence Award (REA) grant program from 2000-2004, in the Reading First program from 2005-2009, in a state Math Improvement Grant from 2006-2009, as well as in a couple of secondary math grants extending from 2006-2009. As a results of these grants, which provided the research base and the resources, we have been able to implement many research-based practices in reading, writing, and math. We have experienced some positive results in terms of student achievement as a result of these grants.
The Board of Education has actively participated in the What Counts process, a process by which the Board and the school district is able to elicit input from the community on its various programs and practices. We encourage the community to participate in our What Counts events as a way to engage in our improvement processes.
In 2001, Carbon School District established the following academic goals: #1A Writing, #1B Reading, #2 Mathematics. While all areas of the curriculum would receive dedicated effort and attention, these three areas would be the focus across the curriculum. We have implemented many research-based practices and continue to investigate best practices in all areas of the curriculum. Our future goals include Community Engagement along with the focus on these academic areas.
