Christmas Spirit Hits Carbon High School
by Mr. Stanfield
December 2007
The holiday spirit has hit Carbon High School, with trees glistening in the Grand Canyon Hall and doors being decorated by classes, you can sense the spirit of the holiday. Each class and club decorated a tree and will provide presents and food for a meal for the less fortunate. This is one way Carbon High School can give back to the community for all of the support they give to here at the high school.
Each teacher was asked to have one of their classes decorate their classroom door for a door decorating contest. The doors will be judged and the winning class will receive a prize.
The choir and band have also added to the Christmas spirit with their concerts that they performed for the school and community.
We want to congratulate Mr. Alleman's 8th hour class for winning the class competition for bringing in the most food for the Thanksgiving food drive. They were rewarded with a pizza party, compliments of the administration. We want to thank all of the students for bringing in food and helping those folks in need.
Mr. Stanfield was asked to judge the many drawings that were entered by Carbon High students to represent our school mascot. The winner of the contest is Madison Tease, a senior and also the Art Sterling Scholar at Carbon High.
Her drawing is pictured below.

Safety Concerns at Carbon High School
By Greg Stanfield Principal Carbon High School
January 17, 2008
With all of the incidents that have happened across the nation in schools, businesses, etc., we at Carbon High School want to be prepared. The administration and director of security of C.H.S. are concerned and want to do all we can to protect our students and staff.
This year, we have come up with a more detailed plan when it comes to emergencies such as fire drills, intruders in the building, lockdowns etc. The teachers have been given a plan which has been discussed with their students. As a school, we have and will continue to practice for these emergencies. We do take this seriously, and we want the students to know we do want to keep them safe.
Some others procedures we are implementing in this safety plan are as follows: (We need the community and parents to support us in these measures.) Each staff member has been issued and wears a photo I.D. badge daily so emergency responders and people can identify our staff members immediately, if and when an emergency occurs. All guest teachers will also wear an I.D. badge to identify their role in our building. We are also asking all visitors, when they come into our building, to check in at the main office. Even if you are visiting the attendance office, you must sign in at the main office. You will be issued an I.D. badge which you will return when you leave the building. By doing this, we have better control of who, when and where strangers are in the building.
We are also going to be issuing a student photo I.D. badge to all students and they must wear these when they are attending school and activities. We have so many students that come on our campus, and we are not sure who they are or why they are on our campus. By doing this, we can easily identify our students and know who should be in our school. Parents and guardians, we want you to encourage your students to wear their I.D. badges daily. Again, we are doing this to protect your student.
In regards to entrances to the building after 8:30 a.m., the only doors that will be unlocked will be the front main entrance doors. Everyone entering the building must enter and sign in at the office. We have provided an elevator to help those needing handicap access. Those entering the building are recorded on surveillance cameras. It is imperative that we know who is in our school.
As a community, we want you to support us in our efforts to keep students and staff safe. We hope we never have a crisis that has happened too many times across America over the years, but we at Carbon do want to make every effort to be prepared and prevent this from happening here.
If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact the Administration at Carbon High School.
Dear parent/guardian:
Carbon High school will be giving the Utah Basic Skills Competency Test (UBSCT) on February 5th, 6th and 7th to all Sophomores and others who may need to retake a section or sections. This is the competency testing required by the State Office of Education. In order to receive a regular diploma, students must take and pass all three sections of the UBSCT; Writing, Mathematics and Reading. Students who take the test but do not pass a section or sections will have the opportunity to take the test again unless they are seniors, who will be attempting for their final time. Please be sure that if you have a student who will be testing, he/she is in attendance and arrives by 8:25 a.m. on these dates. If your student must be absent on any of these dates, he/she must be pulled from other classes to make up sections that were missed.
Juniors and Seniors not involved in testing, will begin school at 10:07 a.m. on February 5th, 6th and 7th. Buses will run on their usual schedule. Juniors and Seniors who arrive early or who are bused may go to the cafeteria, library, gym or Grand Canyon hall to work on home work. They may also choose to arrive at the school when 1st or 2nd period begins. The bell schedule is listed below for your convenience.
