We are excited to have spring here at Carbon High School. Many of our students are taking advantage of the great weather and riding skateboards, scooters, etc. to school. Although we are glad to see our students using alternative modes of transportation, we do not want to have that traffic in the school. All scooters, skateboards, or the like must be checked in at the office at the beginning of school and stored there during the day. Students can pick them up and use them at lunch and return them to the office until after school. The office has a secure rack to store these safely. Scooters, skateboards, etc. are not allowed in the classrooms. Thanks!

We are excited to announce that Carbon High School 2021 Graduation will be held at the Carbon High School football field on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at 11:00 AM. Feedback from seniors overwhelmingly indicated a desire to be with their class/friends and have their family there as well. The football field provides the best chance to have the full senior class together and to include more family and friends in celebrating this important day. Each student will receive 7 tickets for guests. In order to “walk” at graduation and receive those tickets, seniors will need to fill out a check-out sheet for grades, work off any U’s (citizenship), and pay all school fees in the Main Office. This is a formal event, however, we ask that high heels (with skinny heel tips that could puncture the track or sink into the field) NOT be worn in order to protect the participants and the track/field. More detailed information will follow.

Just a reminder that masks are still the rule at school. The following message was sent out by the Carbon School District on Friday as a reminder that we will still be requiring masks to be wore at schools through the end of the school year. CHS parents and students, please help us have a safe and successful end to the school year. CSD - We are grateful to be one of the very few districts in the U.S. to hold in-person school 5 days a week all school year long. We entered the school year with a commitment that "all healthy students need to be in school". Because of our compliance with our reopening plan and all other requirements, this commitment was realized. We are also grateful that our students have been able to participate in most extra-curricular activities and even prom. The Governor, in consultation with the Utah Department of Health, has extended the requirement for wearing masks in our schools until June 15th. Carbon School District is obligated to comply with this mandate. We ask for your support. We do not want to see any non-compliance negatively impact our students being able to participate in all the upcoming learning and activities. With only 7 weeks of school left, let's finish strong with our masks on! For more information on the mask mandate, please visit: https://coronavirus.utah.gov/education/

Hello CHS Parents/Guardians, Carbon High School is committed to doing all we can to try and keep students and guests safe when they are in the building. While we can’t prepare for every possible situation, we try to think ahead of areas where we can practice and improve. One area we are concerned about is what happens if there was an emergency during an event in the gym; a basketball or volleyball game or an assembly? We have been working with the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office to plan a DRILL that would simulate what might happen if a situation were to occur during a basketball game. This DRILL is scheduled to take place on March 4th, at 2:30 PM at Carbon High School. It will only impact activities in the gym, not in the rest of the school. Students in classes will continue learning as normal during the DRILL and will be kept in the classrooms and out of the halls. We are letting parents know so they can be aware of what is going on at the school that afternoon. If you need to check your student out of school early, please be aware that law enforcement will be blocking access to the parking lot starting at 1:30 so you will need to get you student out of class before then. While a few students will be part of the DRILL, the majority of the students will be in classes participating in normal class activities. This DRILL will be completed before school gets out at the end of the day and students will be dismissed at their normal time. We appreciate your support during this DRILL. While we hope to never face any emergency situations, we are confident that DRILLS like this will help us be better prepared for situations that may come up in the future.

Carbon School District is seeking applications for a Science Teacher at Carbon High School. Required to teach students on a specific scientific subject.  Will plan the curriculum for their classes and then deliver that curriculum. Teachers evaluate and mentor their students. Evaluations usually take the form of grading homework, tests, and projects. Teachers keep records of these grades so students, parents, and school administrators know where the students stand. Mentor students, encouraging them to excel in their schooling. Teachers may also work closely with students interested in the sciences and help direct them to the right educational path. This usually involves participating in parent-teacher conferences and school staff meetings. Will enforce school and classroom rules and discipline students, when necessary. This can be a difficult task, but it is necessary to ensure a safe school environment in which all students can freely learn without having to worry about disruptions. High school science teachers may also be involved in extra-curricular activities such as science fairs, science clubs, and other activities.  Science teachers report directly to the school administrators.  At the minimum, this position requires a bachelor’s degree and a teaching certificate OR the ability to obtain such.  Open until filled. Construction has begun at Carbon High School for the new addition. As part of the construction the walls out in front of the school that said "CARBON" had to be removed. However we recognize the connection that so many residents of Carbon County have to their High School. We want to offer you your own "piece of Carbon". A large stack of bricks has been been placed on a pallet and set aside on the patio near the doors to the Grand Canyon. Anyone who would like to have a brick to keep as a memento from your time at Carbon High is welcome to come and claim one. Please only take a brick from the pallet, DO NOT GO INTO THE CONSTRUCTION SITE. If we run out of bricks on the pallet, we will add more over the next few days. You have until Monday July 13th and then the remaining bricks will be hauled away. We are excited for the new additions to CHS that are coming as part of the Bond. Thank you for all you do as a community to support Carbon High. GO DINOS!!

We wanted to take one last opportunity to congratulate all of our CHS 2020 Senior Graduates. As a part of our graduation activities Castle Country Radio put together a video from the drive through ceremony that took place yesterday. The video link will show the cars driving through and the students receiving their diploma folders. There is audio that plays along with the video, that includes all of the audio from the graduation DVD, plus information about each graduate. Their names are read in alphabetical order, so it does not coordinate with the cars on video. Use the following link from koalitv.com to listen and watch: https://vcloud.blueframetech.com/broadcast/embed/183303?windowed=true On Wednesday night Carbon High School held their annual end-of-the-year ESPY awards. The ceremony was broadcast live on KOAL and includes interviews from some of the students winners. This audio can be found using the following link: http://www.castlecountryradio.com/2020/05/22/carbon-high-school-hosts-annual-espy-awards-complete-show-available-here/ We want to thank everyone who helped to make these great events take place. Without the support of local businesses, the police and sheriff's office, ETV, local radio stations, teachers and staff at CHS, parents and families of our students, and most importantly the Senior Class of 2020, none of this would have been possible. Congratulations again to all of our graduates. We wish you the best in all of your future endeavors.

CHS Student Checkout and May 2020 Final Week Activities. We hope your family is safe and healthy! As we move forward, the future isn’t clear, but it is bright! We look forward to the day when our students will be back with us, and we can once again be together. With the COVID -19 virus, cleaning at CHS has been increased and the entire school will be sanitized. This includes ALL lockers, classrooms, gyms, weight & locker rooms, etc. In order to facilitate a locker clean out along with our regular student checkout for the year (fees, textbooks, instruments, athletic gear etc.), we are putting into place specific procedures. These procedures have been reviewed and approved by South Eastern Health District officials. We will adhere to recommended social distancing during checkout. The instructions have been sent out by mail, email, the CHS Webpage, and can be found using the following link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tdrzfLN0Kb2QRMEAN-sgSF3apK2HHn61K55TstvVD5c/edit Use the the link below (or CHS website) to signup for a day and time to come in a checkout at the school. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0D48A8AE22A1FD0-carbon You will be turning in your Chromebook, any textbooks, library books, borrowed team uniforms or equipment, and pay any fees. We are asking that all fees be paid this school year. Your fees list will be mailed to you. If you have concerns about being able to pay all your fees at this time, please talk to the office to work out accommodations. Over the next two weeks student activities will be available on the school website at the bottom of the page in the calendar section. Each department will share one activity each day. You can access them using a cell phone, tablet or home computer during the weeks. If you want to print off all of the activities using a Chromebook before you return it to the school you can. If you are unable to access the activities, please do not worry, your grade will not be impacted by these activities, the idea is to keep you connected to the school and learning for two more weeks. If you need to use your Chromebook over the next two weeks for completing assignments, or taking tests in AP or Concurrent Enrollment classes, please sign up for one of the last days in the middle of May to return your Chromebook. Check with your teachers to see if you will need a Chromebook after Monday. We look forward to seeing you all one last time before summer break.

Graduation and Prom are still happening at Carbon High School. We wanted to make everyone, especially our Seniors, aware that the administration, teachers and staff at CHS are committed to making sure there is a Junior Prom and Graduation Ceremony this year. We don't know when those events will happen this summer (or possibly Fall), but no matter how long we have to wait, they will still happen. We are planning a Graduation Event for May 21st, to commemorate the actual day of Graduation. More details on this event will be coming, and we will adhere to all requirements given to use by the Health Department. If circumstances change in the next 4 weeks, we may alter this event. However, this event will not replace the formal graduation ceremony that we will have as soon as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and we can all get back together again. This is very important to us and we want to assure everyone that we are doing all we can to make sure our Seniors can still celebrate there 4 years at CHS the right way.

Carbon High School is seeking applications to fill a full time School Counselor position. A high school counselor plays the role of academic advisor to high school students. If students are not meeting course requirements or are having disciplinary problems, high school counselors may intervene to remedy the situation. The first priority of the counselor is to ensure that students perform their best academically. Counselors in secondary education are tasked with helping adolescents navigate the unique educational, social and behavioral obstacles related to attending high school. This may include issues such as staying in school and avoiding substance abuse. They must also act as social workers, seeking to identify home-based problems that may negatively impact the academic and social development of students. A high school counselor is expected to be very knowledgeable of career preparation in order to provide advice to students regarding education and employment options after high school. Counselors supply admission requirements for colleges and training programs, and otherwise help students with graduation preparedness. To this end, counselors may invite Armed Forces recruiters and business leaders to the school to explain the benefits of their industries to high school graduates. They may also plan and execute career fairs and volunteer internships. Common duties include disseminating of scholarship information, supplying school-to-career guidance, interpreting standardized test scores, developing guidance curriculum, providing student resources, counseling individual students, coordinating with social service agencies, maintaining records, facilitating conferences and orientating new students. They may work with students one-on-one, in a private setting with teachers and parents, or with peers in a group assembly or discussion forum. Must have a current Utah School Counselor License or have the ability to receive the license in a timely manner, interns will be considered.   This position closes at 3:00 pm on Friday, March 27, 2020

Message from Sheriff Wood- I want to personally wish everyone a happy Halloween! With that said I want to remind everybody that we want you to have fun but don’t let Halloween mischief turn criminal. Be respectful of people’s personal property and keep an eye out for the trick or treaters tonight in our travels. We will have extra patrols in the areas we believe will be most impacted by this event. Extra patrols will be conducted with two person teams riding UTV’s in order to assist with traffic/pedestrian control. We feel this is a great opportunity for our Deputies to interact with the public in a fun and positive way. They will have candy to give out to the kids, but would ask that the public only approach our UTV’s when they are safely parked on the curb. We want everyone to have fun, but want to remind everybody to be careful while driving through these busy neighborhoods tonight. I wanted to bring up a topic that has been on my mind a lot recently. The use of social media at times is a blessing and a curse. I would ask that before you make a post, to think about the outcomes of the post and the purpose of your message. All too often I see social media posts that are posted with good intentions, but become a negative message in the community. From a law enforcement standpoint it needs to be known that we cannot always post details of an investigation but will always make public safety a top priority. We will never take unnecessary risks with public safety and will assure you the public will be notified immediately upon a serious and substantiated threat to our community. This notification would come through all media outlets, social media and the phone systems in the event of an actual substantiated issue. The fact that a single unsubstantiated post on social media can spread through the community and cause panic is frustrating. All too often the facts get skewed in the rumor mill, but may be portrayed as actual and factual information which can causes panic in the community. Please be careful of what you post, contact your local law enforcement upon any suspicious activity, questions, or concerns. Trust that your local law enforcement agency is taking your concerns seriously and appropriate measures are in place. You are always welcome to contact me with any questions or concerns that may be related to an event or incident that has occurred in our community. I would like to remind you “if you see something say something”. Again, I would like to wish everyone a happy Halloween, have fun but be careful out there. I am proud to be part of this community and honored to be in the position of Sheriff. We truly live in a great place. Thanks Jeff Wood
