Tier I Instruction

  • All students will receive on-grade level instruction from Wonders, the district adopted reading series program
  • Flood Time: All students will be placed in reading ability groupings and receive time to read literature on their level

Description of Programs used

Wonders Grades K-5

Scott Foresman Reading Street. Is designed to help teachers build readers through motivating and engaging literature, scientifically research-based instruction, and a wealth of reliable teaching tools. Reading Street prioritized skill instruction at each grade level, so teachers can be assured they will focus on the right reading skill, at the right time, and for every student. Multiple forms of assessment are contained in the program. The Wonders materials will be implemented as Tier I instruction

Wonderworks

Wonderworks is an intensive reading intervention program that accelerates the reading development of struggling students. It aligns instruction perfectly with Scott Foresman Wonders, but can be used with any core classroom reading program. Wonderworks accelerates reading through: 30 weeks of reading intervention, 30-45 minutes every day; emphasis on deep meaning of vocabulary and concepts; and highly specified instruction so you teach less, more thoroughly. It will be used during both Tier I and Tier II interventions.

PHONICS FOR READING

Phonics for Reading by Anita Archer, James Flood, Diane Lapp, and Linda Lungren. Support students who struggle with reading comprehension because they struggle with decoding.

- Build phonemic awareness, decoding, and fluency skills to strengthen reading comprehension.

- Systematic, explicit instruction builds confidence and motivation.

- Specifically designed to appeal to older students.

READ NATURALLY

Read Naturally is used as a Tier II intervention. It combines teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. Students work at the reading level appropriate to their achievement and progress through the program at their own rate. Read Naturally is designed to increase time spent reading.

Reading Eggs/Eggspress

Reading Eggs is a comprehensive, on-line supplemental literacy program. It is used as a Tier III intervention strategy for students from kindergarten-sixth grades. Reading Eggs builds on and reinforces phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension through interactive animations, learning activities, fun games, great songs, and lots of rewards.

SPIRE/Sound Sensible

Intensive, multisensory reading intervention by Sheila Clark-Edmands. Aligned to Common Core. SPIRE is a small group or one-on-one reading intervention program that can be used by a wide range of struggling readers in Tier II or Tier III for instruction. SPIRE is a comprehensive, intensive, and multisensory reading intervention that integrates phonological awareness, phonics, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and handwriting. SPIRE is based on the well-established Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction. The program is designed to incorporate the Orton-Gillingham approach, which involves systematic, explicit, sequential, multisensory, phonics-based, and emotionally sound instruction. SPIRE comprises eight levels that consist of increasingly complex content.
