Melody

Join us as we celebrate and honor Melody on her upcoming retirement after 28 remarkable years with Carbon School District.

Born and raised in Price, Utah, Melody still lives in the very home where her journey began. With the guidance and love of her parents, David and Ruth Dillon, she learned the value of hard work, resilience, and the irreplaceable gift of education. Although her parents weren’t able to complete their own schooling, they made sure Melody knew its importance—and her father always dreamed she’d become a teacher. While he didn’t get to see that dream come true, Melody is sure he would be proud beyond words.

Supported by her devoted husband, Gary, Melody embarked on a bold journey to pursue her degree while raising her children and working full-time at China City. She earned her degree in 1995, proving that determination and love for learning know no timeline.

Melody began her teaching career at Sally Mauro Elementary as a Title I teacher, then spent six years teaching 5th grade at Peterson Elementary, and found her calling at Wellington Elementary, teaching everything from 2nd and 4th grades to her beloved subject—science—for 4th and 5th graders. That was truly a dream come true for her. Her classroom became known as a haven for curious minds—complete with jars for bugs and plenty of rocks brought in by students eager to share in her wonder of the natural world. She became affectionately known as the "bee" or "bug lady" and lovingly embraced her reputation as the "crazy science lady."

Though COVID briefly paused her journey, Melody returned as soon as she could, continuing to give her heart to students as a paraprofessional and later returning to the classroom to teach 3rd grade. Her dedication never wavered. Even in retirement, she plans to stay close to the classroom as a Guest Teacher and volunteer—because, as she says, she'll always be a teacher at heart.

Melody’s goal has always been simple yet profound: to help students aim high and feel loved, appreciated, and safe. She’s touched countless lives, and the memories, laughter, and lessons she’s shared will ripple through generations.

As Melody says, this road trip isn’t over—she’s just switching lanes. She’s off to enjoy some scenic side roads, with more time for family and reflection. But her heart will always be in the classroom.

Congratulations, Melody! Thank you for the joy, wisdom, and love you’ve shared so freely. You've made a lasting difference, and your legacy will continue to inspire.
