August 2020

Dear Students and Parents,

Wow what a year!  We are so excited to be back in the building for school!  Your classroom teacher has been working hard these past few weeks excitedly preparing the classroom while eagerly awaiting for school to start on Wednesday, August 19th, 2020 for all 1st - 5th grade students.  Kindergarten students will start the following week on Wednesday, August 26th, 2020 after completing their testing.

Starting the first day of school, students will use the outside classroom door to gain access to their new classroom when the 8:10 am bell rings. Students are required to wear their face mask as they enter the building. Students are not required to wear a face mask during recess or PE.

We are focusing on teaching students good hygiene habits to encourage a safe and healthy school environment. On the first day back, students will be taught proper handwashing procedures and will be expected to wash their hands at the beginning of each school day as well as other key times such as: before lunch, after using the restroom, and after recess.  In addition, hand sanitizer will also be available throughout the building

We will continue to serve school breakfast and lunch this year in our cafeteria. Breakfast is free to all students and school lunch is $1.80 ($.40 for Free/Reduced Lunch).  School breakfast will be served from 7:45-8:05 am.  This is when the building is unlocked and supervision begins.

Students can still pay their school lunch money in the cafeteria each morning before the school day begins. Parents can pay for student’s lunch on the Carbon School District website at https://www.carbonschools.org/. Look for the “Nutrition and Services” tab. Daily Breakfast and Lunch Menus for each school is also available on this tab. Due to plant closures, CSD will often be substituting a Grill Cheese and Soup on days that the lunch choice is Peanut Butter & Jelly.

Due to the heightened health and safety concerns we are implementing the following changes:

  • Students will enter the cafeteria for both breakfast and lunch through the north lunchroom door (previously the lunchroom exit door).
  • Parents and siblings will not be allowed to eat in the cafeteria with their students.  Parents may still check their child out at the office to take them out to lunch.
  • The lunchroom will not have the water jug this year.  Parents will need to send their child with a water bottle in their lunch.  A water cup will be available for students to use at the drinking fountain if they forgot their water bottle
  • There will be no microwaves in the lunchroom.  Students will not be able to have their lunch warmed up so please send a cold lunch with students who do home lunch.

Mark your calendar for our Back-2-School Night which will be held in your child’s classroom on Wednesday, August 26th from 5:30-7:00 pm.  There will be 3 sessions for parents to attend:  5:30-5:55 pm, 6:00-6:25 pm, and 6:30-6:55 pm.  In order to limit group gathering sizes, we are asking that only one adult per household attend each session and that children are left home.  Parents will access classrooms using the outside classroom door. Your child’s classroom teacher will be sending home a letter with a Google Meet meeting code that you can use to attend Back-2-School Night virtually if you are unable to attend in person.  Parents attending virtually will be able to hear the teacher’s presentation but will not be able to interact or ask the teacher questions at that time.

Our School Community Council (SCC) needs volunteers! If you are interested in getting involved in the decision-making process regarding school improvement goals and asset allocations provided by the Utah Lands Trust, please consider joining our School Community Council (SCC).  To nominate yourself to serve on our SCC, email me at fluckeyw@carbonschools.org.  We are accepting nominations for Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and Secretary on the SCC through Friday, September 4, 2020.  Elections for these positions will be held in the Castle Heights library on Monday, September 14th, 2020 at 3:15 pm in the library.

Another great way to get involved in school happenings is to join our PTA.  Beth Nielsen is our new PTA president and she has lots of fun ideas for the 2020-2021 school year.  Please stop by the PTA table which will be set up outside the main entrance doors during Back-2-School night to sign up for your PTA membership.

Parents can stay informed with classroom/school activities by checking your child’s backpack daily for letters from their teacher/school.  You can also download our free Carbon School District, UT App, select Castle Heights to follow us on the web.

I look forward to this year and working with all of you!
