Dear CSD Parents and Guardians,
As our winter weather approaches, we would like to communicate our district's plan to safely transport students during heavy snowfall. COMMUNICATION WILL BE PROVIDED ANY TIME THERE IS AN ADJUSTMENT TO THE NORMAL SCHOOL DAY.
The following plan will be implemented when we experience heavy snowfall such that we cannot safely transport students to school as normally scheduled.
1. Carbon School District does not intend to cancel school for snow. We will use a "Late Start" schedule through the winter months. All district schedules will be adjusted by two (2) hours. For instance, if your child boards the bus at 7:00 on a normal day, they would board at 9:00 on a "Late Start" day. If school starts at 8:10 on a normal day, it will start at 10:10 on a "Late Start" day. School will ALWAYS end at the normal time.
2. In most cases, decisions cannot be made until the morning of the heavy snowfall. If an adjustment to the regular schedule is necessary, parents will be notified by 6:00 a.m. using our parent notification system. In addition, messages will be posted on all school and district websites and social media.
3. All Carbon School District preschool programs will be canceled on "Late Start" days.
Thank you for your support and cooperation as we work through potential extreme weather.

Congrats to our State Champion Marching Band and Color Guard! We will welcome them home today at CHS at 12:30pm. We hope to see you there...

CSD Students, Parents, and Guardians,
I wanted to provide clarification on the cell phone policy as we start 2nd quarter on Monday, October 21.
We will begin a "soft rollout" for the new cell phone policy that will be in effect until November 13. This means that we are going to enforce the ban on cell phones during instructional time and use reminders for non-instructional time to help students adjust to the new expectations.
The pouches will not be issued until the new policy is implemented. This means that students will be expected to keep their phones out of sight during class without the use of the pouches.
The soft rollout will be in effect until the new policy is passed in November. We hope that enforcing a strict ban during class time and constantly reminding students during non-instructional times will help the students adjust to the upcoming changes.
We appreciate your support as parents to encourage students to follow the expectations.
Thank you,
Mika Salas

CSD Parents and Guardians,
We understand that the information shared this week regarding a cell phone ban during school hours is a huge change for you and your students.
We will communicate regularly over the next month to help you understand the implementation details. We will share data describing the rationale for the consideration, details about student expectations, and how we can work together to work through this transition together.
Questions were brought to us yesterday regarding students with medical needs, how the pouches will be locked and unlocked, and the use of phones during extra-curricular activities.
We have added this information to our FAQ document linked below. In the document, you will also see a link to a video showing how students unlock their pouches as they leave the school.

We hope to earn your support as we go through this process.

CSD Parents and Guardians,
Starting on October 21, 2024, Carbon School District is implementing a cell phone ban. Our primary goal is to reduce the overwhelming distraction to learning caused by cell phone use in school.
For secondary schools, we are implementing a policy requiring cell phones to be locked in a school-provided, signal-blocking pouch. The students will be responsible for locking their phones in the pouch at the beginning of the school day. The students will maintain possession of their phones during the entire day as long as the phone remains in the pouch.
We understand that this is a big change and parents will have many questions. We also realize that parents must contact their students in emergency situations. Please read through the FAQ and infographic found on our district and school websites to help answer some of your initial questions.
We will continue to share information from now until the planned implementation day to help ease the transition for students and parents.
We appreciate your cooperation as we work to support our students through this transition.
Thank you,
Mika
